Makenzie Burrows is a first year Master’s Student in Mya Breitbart’ lab at the University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science. She is excited to be studying DNA barcoding of fish eggs. She graduated from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg with a Bachelor’s in Biology. During her undergrad she worked with a Ph.D student (Liz Fahsbender) on sequencing the a virus thought to cause tumors in sea turtles (chelonid fibropapillomatosis-associated herpesvirus). Makenzie just finished a project identifying eggs on and off the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. Currently she is working on barcoding eggs off the coast of Cuba and looking for novel spawning grounds in the Gulf of Mexico. She enjoys spreading the word of science around the community via the annual St. Petersburg Science Fest and with Girls Inc. Makenzie is interested in pursuing a career incorporating science outreach, research and teaching.
